Since my PC was very strong, I didn't have to hire many mercs to help me on missions, which means I was swimming in money to always have the very best gear myself. In hindsight, I should probably have gone with shotguns instead of assault rifles for a particular reason at the very end of the game that I don't want to spoil now, but rifles worked out well enough. Simple and perfect to learn how the system works for a first game. Elf, enough body for decent hitpoints, max out assault rifles and dodge and ignore everything else. The story is actually pretty good I think, especially the ending, but the setting itself isn't overly interesting. At a certain point in the story, vendors unlock new inventory and as long as you have the cash you just buy your upgrade there, done. Yes, there are gear upgrades, but there is no crafting or gathering materials or farming for random drops or any of that annoying stuff. I also like that item and party management is kept to a minimum. It took a bit of getting used to at first but this "RPG light" type of structure plays extraordinarily well. I really like this and it was a fresh breeze compared with the more RPG-typical connected worlds. From there, you embark on your runs, mission-style. You have a hub in between missions to talk to NPCs and upgrade gear. In all 3, you play a shadowrunner who does jobs to stay alive and then uncovers some major event that he ends up stopping. They are all awesome in their own regard and I get why Dragonfall is generally regarded as the best title in the series, although they all have their strengths and weaknesses and my personal experience was a bit different. Playtime was about 10 hours for the first, 25 hours for the second and 30 hours for the third including the bonus campaign. I finally got around to playing Shadowrun Returns and got absolutely sucked into this amazing world, binging all 3 titles over the last few weekends. Mixing cyberpunkt, near-future technology with classic fantasy elements like dragons and magic is pretty awesome.
